MISCANTHUS GIGANTEUS (One order is 5 plants) - 1/2 gallon size,(a small handful size of root system, with 2 or more rhizomes attached), bareroot to semi bareroot divisions

Expected growth the first season is 6-8' tall, about 1' wide, though plants will look sparce the first year. Recommended spacing at planting is 1.5- 2' apart. See fact sheet on home page or miscanthus page for pictures and more information-

This is an unpatented plant- the Illinois strain of Miscanthus Giganteus. Sometimes spelled Giganteus , and referred to as Miscanthus x Giganteus, Giant Silver Reed Grass, or Miscanthus Floridus.

Hardy zones 4-9. One of the tallest grasses, 12-14 foot tall at maturity. Leaves grow up and gracefully cascade outward. Showy spikelet's form a needle like silvery-white awn in autumn. Very ornamental, lasting through the winter. Very useful for screening, hedges and specimen plantings.

Plant in average soils in full sun, will take part shade, but you may not have as tall growth. Will grow in most any soil, but fertile soils are best. Likes lots of moisture, but not grow in standing water. MUST HAVE GOOD DRAININAGE FOR THE FIRST YEAR TO SURVIVE, BUT ALSO GOOD MOISTURE. Non-invasive, but this grass is still a vigorous type, roughly tripling in root mass in one seasons growth.

When planting all existing vegetation should be removed and weed control will need to be practiced through the growing season for good sucess. This is a warm season grass and usually will not start top growth until temps are in the mid 60's. We have noticed that first year plants do no always sprout at the same time, patience is required for the patch to fill in a look uniform.
